Out of the Miry Clay
1950 to 1995 about the accomplishments of Selma Burke, very little is noted about her religious beliefs — other than the fact that she belonged to Watkins Chapel A. M. E. Zion in Mooresville, North Carolina. According to a newspaper article written in 1993, Burke spent her last months in a Quaker Nursing Home. She had become an admirer of the Quaker way of life and was supportive of their community in the New Hope, Pennsylvania area. Selma asked to be
cremated and her ashes spread across the Delaware River in New Hope according to her great nephew. Burke was asked how she would define her legacy. She replied, ‘I did what I had to do which was to sculpt, to create.’”
